We are investigating the implementation of a command and control system based on unix, Xwindows(MOTIF) and an FDDI lan that uses a commercial database to manage the less than real time data/functions. These functions include input and management of data that is modified infrequently (andread frequently) such as configuration and status information. Response time for operator entered commands to update thecommercial database and to modify the actions of the realtime processes is expected to be less than 1 second.

Any information on viability of this approach, especially from experience, would be appreciated.
