We recently dealt with a client who has a BIG VMS box and wanted to use it as an oracle DB server - they required TCP/IP software so that a SUN sparc10 could use the DB. They realised that the cost of adding extra CPU, memory +xtra 8gig disk(s) (+xtra SCSI controller) would be roughly equivalent to the cost of the TCP software for the VMS box. This would mean that the sparc10 would end up more powerfull than the big VAX.

They are now going to go the sparc10 route and leave the VMS box "idle".

p.s. The cost of an Oracle licence blew my mind - the cost of our entire development environment was less than that. And we have a sparc10 + ipc + db software + lotsa other goodies...
