Is the ORACLE_SID environment variable set correctly for your account? The env command will show you if it is set. If it isn't, check your ~/.cshrc file (assuming you are using csh). Note you also need ORACLE_HOME - a call to oraenv or coraenv is the usual way of setting the oracle environment up.
