Are .frm and .rep platform independent

From what I understand .frm and .rep files are platform independent. Has anyone had the experience of creating such files on one platform, copying them to another and having them run successfully?
Will code that has been precompiled (PRO*C) on one platform compile successfully on another platform (if code is standard C and both platforms have std C compilers). Has anyone actually tried this?
