sqlplus error reporting

I am running SQLPLUS 3.0.8.1.5 on an IBM Rs6000-560. Is there a way to flag certain kinds of errors from within SQLPLUS, or after with some type of OS command. I would spool the entire set of transactions, but I don't want to take up the disk space or time looking through 10,000 records in a spool file. Our operations system is AIX 3.2.3.
