Backups on UNIX/ORACLE Servers

Over the past year, my DBA responsibilities have quickly "migrated" from VMS to UNIX. In the VMS days, I never concerned myself with whether the Operations group was using the correct media and tape backup system. VMS allowed me to see if my database files were being backed up, so I slept soundly.

Unfortunately, I do not have the same comfort level with UNIX. Our Unix Operations group (don't ask - we have two, a VMS and UNIX Operational Group) currently uses a backup system called BudTool by Delta. This BudTool is used to schedule the backups on my ever growing number of ORACLE servers. I have seen lots of problems with this system from backups just not running to the entire database used by BudTool being corrupted.

My questions are --- What tape backup systems are other sites using to backup UNIX/Oracle servers ? Does the tape backup system integrate well with hot/cold backups ?? Does the tape system hang off each server or does one system backup all servers over the network ?? Is anyone using BudTool and have an opinion ??

I'd really like to recommend another tape backup system to the Unix Operations Group, so please send me any vendor information, etc.

Please post or e-mail me at CORCODILOS_at_BMS.COM.

Thanks in advance for your help.
