EXPLAIN Feature

I'm trying to use the explain feature on Oracle 7.0. I'd could ask several questions but, trying not to look for the quick answer, I'd thought I'd ask where I might find more information on this feature. Oracle docs seem to focus only on explaining queries not evaluating the query USING the explain output. Any hints?
