Have a look at the "Optimal Flexible Architecture". This is a standard put out by Oracle Consulting. It is described on p 2-11 to 2-24 of the SUNOS IUG for 7.0.13. I would expect to find it in the IUG for other ports.
Personally I don't like it, but it is worth a look.
