If you backup the entire disk that contains Oracle and all tablespaces without shutting down the database will it restore successfully? That is if you restore the entire disk with the backup did Oracle lose anything? Or should the database be shutdown and restarted?

Any information on backup methods in general would also be helpful?

Also should this system be converted to Oracle7? Would we see a performance gain?
