Even worse, it seems to work if you order by 1 ASC!!!
Very strange, but I do have the same outcome on Sun Solaris Oracle 7.0.15.4.0 - except as noted above.
Don't have time to run execution plans, but I bet they would offer some insight into what it THINKS it's doing!
