Thanks to everyone who replied regarding my question of CASE usage. Although the response was not overwhelming, I think it is a decent sampling. The following is a summary of replies:

users of Dictionary: 90%

users of Designer: 100%

users of Generator: 50%

Comments:

  • Can increase productivity, if using Generator and is not the first project
  • Powerful tool for designing large, complex systems
  • Requires more front-end analysis, but is worthwhile if using Generator.
  • Useful for reverse-engineering
  • Requires steep learning curve and large investment in time and training
  • Meta-model difficult to understand
  • Have to modify generated DDL for version 7
  • Not a clear one-to-one relationship between Dictionary contents and generated code
  • Lacks a trigger / procedure library
  • Poor report capability .... most users are writing their own reports
  • Using the matrices in Designer are tedious, but less tedious than using Dictionary
  • Dislike the character-based interface for Dictionary; prefer GUI screens
  • Would like to see Designer show attributes (i.e., E-A-R Diagram)

People seem to fall into two camps; very enthusiastic or very pessimestic. They either loved it or hated it; no in-between.
