Overhead and Rollbacks

I'm using PL/SQL to process data one month at a time. I can do a COMMIT after each month or after processing all months. What are the advantages (if any) of committing when possible? It would seem logical that disk space would be reduced because the database has to "remember" less if commits are performed when possible. Any thought?
