Applied Database Research

Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening in the Chicago area for two bright, innovative, dedicated, product-oriented applied database research professionals.

Position 1:

The position calls for strong abilities in the analysis and design of large, complex databases for commercial, scientific and engineering applications. In addition, the ability to write papers on various database technology issues is required. Effectiveness in hands-on development of C++ and/or C code is essential; hands on competency in at least one major relational or object-oriented DBMSs is required. Background in text or multi-media databases is an advantage.

Position 2:

The position calls for strong abilities in the design and implementation of large, complex databases for commercial, scientific and engineering applications. Effectiveness in hands-on development of C++ and/or C code is helpful; hands on competency in at least one major relational or object-oriented DBMSs is required. Background in text or multi-media databases is an advantage.

Current Database Areas requiring applied research and project activities include:

  • Federated Databases: The AMTEX Partnership will build a Federated Multi-media Database linking 26,000 Textile Companies and 100,000 retail stores nationwide.
  • Petabyte Storage System: A scientific database of 1,000 terabytes of data about high energy physics experiments.
  • Environmental Databases: Large data collections of experimental data and the metadata describing them.

The successful applicants must have:

  • Ability to assimilate and originate new concepts and techniques and apply them independently.
  • Project experience implementing large scale databases in government or industry.
  • Experience in software development in a UNIX-based, heterogeneous networking environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English.
  • Ability to function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary development team.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • A list of publications. (Position 1)
  • Hands-on experience with a relational DBMS or ODBMS. (Position 2)
  • Very strong skills in software design and implementation, particularly in C++ and C. (Position 2)

The requisite level of knowledge and expertise for this position 1 is typically achieved through a Ph.D. in computer science (with a dissertation topic in an area of database research) plus over six years relevant job experience.

The requisite level of knowledge and expertise for this position 2 is typically achieved through a M.S. in computer science plus over six years relevant job experience.
