Testing SQL*Net-how?

SUBJECT: Oracle SQL*Net Testing

I installed SQL*Netv.1.1.7.7B for MS Windows on my PC with the v7.0.12.1.0 support files. I do not have an Oracle database (or any Oracle applications) installed on my PC; the Oracle database v.7.0 resides on a UNIX machine. Is there a way I can test if I have SQL*Net installed correctly? Can I connect to the UNIX database?
