You may also get a reaction out of comp.software-eng, but on no account mention patents, it gets them all in a tizz.

I've burnt much late night oil in conference rooms discussing these topics.

Actually in trying to answer your question I found out why these things don't get as discussed as they may, it's too darn fiddly to draw an ERD out of ASCII characters.

So my short answer is, I agree as long a the can is a physical serialised one, otherwose the relationship between strings and telephone models is many to many, which would be resolved through an intersect entity. I suppose going to the nth degree you would also have an ENDS entity with presumably exactly 2 occurances whcih would also be one to many to this intersect entity to discriminate which end a can/string relationship is on.
