Use of BLOB data types

I'm considering using the BLOB data types to stored full motion video. These would be 1 to 5 minute clips which can fit into the 2GB limit.
I was wondering if any one has any experience with the BLOB data types (eg. long in Oracle, image in Sybase, etc.). Did you have long delays when inserting or selecting BLOB data?
