Checkpoint locking

I have been told by Oracle that during a checkpoint, all dirty blocks are locked from update for the entire duration of the checkpoint.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
This would be real bad news for an update-intensive system. Just how long might a worst-case checkpoint take?
