Anyone know about SOUNDEX?

I am looking for any information on the SOUNDEX algorithm which phonetically matches alpha strings. In particular, I am interested in using SOUNDEX with UNIFY 2000 DBS or ACCELL IDS. I have been told that Oracle and Sybase have this built in.

P.S. It doesn't have to be SOUNDEX, any algorithm that does something
similar would be of interest.
