Re: OraPerl (what it is, how to get it)...

OraPerl is an Oracle Call Interface (OCI) for the Perl script language. You need both Perl and OraPerl, archive sites given below.

Perl is *kind of* like a shell script language (c shellish) combined with the best of awk, grep and sed. It's VERY VERY VERY VERY coooool! It's easier and FASTER to use than C and sees ALOT of use in REAL production. Perl was written by Larry Wall, you can actually talk with him over on comp.lang.perl (seems like a very decent fellow).

OraPerl was written by Kevin Stock at Encore (also seems very nice).

Both languages are in widespread use. The only "problem" is that it's public domain stuff and you have to install/port it yourself AND there's noone to buy software support from. Bu that's really not a problem because ...

all those good folks over in comp.lang.perl are always more than willing to help. I've never had a question go unanswered and I usually get MANY responses. All in all, you get much better service from the newsgroup than you'd ever get from a vendor (Oracle's a GOOOOOD example) and it doesn't cost thousands of dollars a year (unless you spend all your time lurking the net).

Perl is available from

      ftp.uu.net 137.39.1.9
      archive.cis.ohio-state.edu 128.146.8.52
      jpl-devvax.jpl.nasa.gov 128.149.1.143

This information was plagerized directly out of the O'Reilly Nutshell book "Programming Perl" (aka the "Camel" book). Don't leave home (or install Perl) without it!

The location of OraPerl is described in the correspondence included below between Kevin Stock and David Bath (frequent poster on this group and keeper of the OP FAQ).

In Australia it is in

	~ftp/usenet/comp.sources.misc/volume3[0-9]/oraperl-v2/*
	Main part in volume 30
Patches in volumes 32 and 33
In Australia you get perl from
	~ftp/gnu/perl*

Hope this helps those of you interested. For those with VMS, you may need to get GNU C (from ~ftp/gnu again).
