Inventory tool

 Dear Reader,

 sorry, I'm not sure if this is the right newsgroup for my question!

 But let me try it ...

 Has anyone experience with 'Inventory' tools since we want to register  our H/W and S/W configuration of our computer systems in a better way  than using an editor.

 I heard about some PC based tools (LAN Support Center, LAN Automatic  Inventory ... ) but to my opinion their functionality is restricted to  a PC LAN.  

 We need similiar tools (the computer platforms where they are running  are unimportant) in order to integrate components such as mainframes,  client/server devices, routers, bridges, hubs...in a very elegant way.
