              EMBL Data Library/European Bioinformatics Institute
COMPUTER MANAGER, DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR, SOFTWARE ENGINEER

The EMBL Data Library is a group within the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, an international research institute located in Heidelberg, Germany. During 1994, the group will be re-located to near Cambridge (UK) and become the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI).

The Data Library/EBI produces information products for molecular biologists, such as databases of genetic sequence information, and distributes them to a world-wide user community. They are used in a variety of applications in medical research, biotechnology and the Human Genome Project. Much of the work is carried out in collaboration with GenBank in the United States, the DNA Database of Japan, and the University of Geneva.

We are seeking candidates for the following posts:

   COMPUTER MANAGER (quote ref 93/20):

To lead a small team responsible for the maintainance and development of the    EBI computer systems and in-house user support. Applicants should have    substantial experience in heterogeneous system integration and networking    involving VMS, UNIX, DOS and Macintosh systems. The ability to articulate    proposals for system development and to conduct effective negotiation with    external bodies is important.

   DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR (quote ref 93/21):

To manage and develop our relational database management systems. Candidates    should have experience relational database design, ORACLE products, software    management and performance tuning in a VAX/VMS production environment, as    well as programming experience in Pascal and C. Experience of UNIX and    object-oriented technology will be advantageous.

   SOFTWARE ENGINEER (quote ref. 93/22):

To join a team working on maintenance and development of the EMBL Nucleotide    Sequence Database. Applicants must be self-motivated and experienced    in using relational databases (preferably ORACLE), VAX/VMS, Pascal and C.    UNIX experience will be advantageous.

Personal initiative is essential for all candidates. All positions offer opportunities for involvement in various collaborative projects.

Contracts will probably be for three years in the first instance, starting as soon as possible, with the possibility of one or more extensions thereafter. Staff would be expected to spend some months working in Heidelberg before the establishment of the EBI near Cambridge, UK, in mid-1994.

EMBL offers a competitive salary and help with relocation expenses. Applications are encouraged from citizens of EMBL Member States (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom).
