I'm not as involved in genealogical research as I used to be, but I know that individuals comprise a significant part of the LDS family research effort. Individual volunteers take copies of old records and decipher and transcribe them for entry into the family history database. Additionally, submissions of research that is complete is accepted by the Family History Department of the LDS Church whether you're a member or not. (If I remember correctly, the church's genealogy software, Personal Ancestral File, has a utility to submit research electronically. However, many features of this software are geared for LDS church members, so there may be better programs available to suit your needs. PC Magazine reviewed some of these programs in After Hours during the last couple of years, so those may help you. Additionally, much, if not all of the Family History database is distributed on CD-ROM to LDS meetinghouse libraries throughout the world. I am sure that if you contacted a local unit they would allow you access to the local machines. Alternatively, you could contact the Family History Dept. itself for an authoritative set of info -- becuase I'm hardly a spokesman.
