Aside from cron, there are some good commercial packages to provide mainframe scheduler-type facilities. You might look at Autosys (I've seen their ads in OST and Unix Review).
When working in batch, you have a choice of SQL*Plus, PL/SQL, a precompiler or parameterized shell scripts (i.e., passing parameters to any of the above). It isn't terribly difficult - and can be flexible as any shell-controlled batch job - overall the same considerations apply to Unix as to VMS, AOS or any other mini-based OS.
