A fast Unix machine will give better performance than a 486. Pentium? Too soon to know, but it's a hot chip, provided the accompanying subsystems can keep up. The fastest low-end Oracle server I've used is the DG AvIIon 530.
NLM (Netware) servers are no slouches at computing; the issue to my way of thinking is what sort of I/O demands there will be. It shouldn't be too tough to show a RISC box (_not_ a Sun) will give better disk performance than a CISC box.
