Firing simultaneus Queries in Oracle.

Hi,
I am using the Oracle Call Interface (OCI) with Oracle 7. I have the following question:
Can I fire a query in the database using say the "oexec()" command, and then at a later time check if the query has actually executed?
Sybase allows this to be done using the commands "sqlsend()" and then "sqlready()" or some similar commands. The first fires the query, the second allows you to poll for the result.
