At the recent Conference for Oracle Developers Alliance (CODA 93), Larry Ellison commented that his vision of Oracle is not on portable PC's.
He sees a businessman using a $99 database to collect his day's work via modem to his portable, massaging the data while on a plane (answering mail, reviewing statistics, generating electronic requests), and updating the enterprisewide database via a modem from his next destination.
This is a realistic vision. And, up to now, Oracle is to be commended for maintaining a development environment available. In fact, you get virtually the same database that mainframers have for a lot less. I don't like paying that much for the database, either.Pass the cost of the PC Oracle database on to your clients. They paid a lot more dollars than that for their Oracle installation that the consultant.
The answer to the $1800 question is connectivity and client/server technology. Your strength lies in developing connective and client/server applications.
