I think the problem is something funky with the way SunOS 4.1.2 reads our CD-ROMs. It apparently wants to attach a '.' to the end of all the filename that do not already contain a '.' I believe the only workaround is to mount the disk on a Sun running 4.1.3 (either that or remove all the offending .'s after copying the whole distribution off CD onto disk -- not a fun thing to do).
