Oracle 6.0.33 install fails on relinking oracle

I am having difficulty getting Oracle installed. Everything restores from tape, oracle.boot runs OK, but when the oracle.install script tried to relink the oracle executable to include TPO and PL/SQL, it bombs.

I've submitted these details to Data General and to SCT (the reseller from which we licensed Oracle). I'm posting to the net because it often happens that some kind soul out there in net.land recognizes somthing dumb that I've done, and sets me right before the "regular channels" get an answer back.
