General Oracle Info needed

I need some basic information about the Oracle database. My employer knows nothing about Oracle, and asked that I find out about it, but I don't know where to begin myself. We want it to run on a sparcstation, and have users from outside log in via modem to access it.

How is it different from other products, like FoxPro and 4th Dimension? What is it best suited for, databasewise? What's it cost?
Can it handle simultanious users? How many? Is it viable for on-line use?

I know these are vague questions, but I'd appreciate any answers the world cares to throw at me.
