Bill of materials, CONNECT BY clause ?

Hallo,

Is the CONNECT BY clause specific to Oracle or is it standard SQL ?

Is there a better way to solve the so called 'bill of materials'-problem, i.e. the query for elements in hierarchical (or direct acyclic graph) structures which can be represented by a simple binary relation ?

I think the CONNECT BY clause does not work within joins. Subqueries are slow, comparing them to joins.
