Hello World !

We at the City Council of Vienna are currently searching a relational database fitting our needs. We have already devoloped some portable database applictations according to the XPG3 standard.

These applications are written in C using embedded SQL, were already tested with ORACLE, INGRES, INFORMIX and ENTIRE/SQL on IBM RS/6000 and don't use _DYNAMIC_ SQL.

We now want to switch to embedded _DYNAMIC_ SQL (used from C applictaions) for the implementation of database servers which don't rely on vendor specific networking software which is of very little use in our heterogenous net.

We want to be as portable as possible in this area too, but the XPG4 manuals are currently not available in europe (if they are, please let me know and excuse my ignorance).

So there are some questions which are in need of clarification.

  1. "How much" is covered by XPG4 regarding data management.

(The wicked one says: XPG3 was _NO_ standard according data
   management.)

2) Where can we get XPG4 papers (drafts) ?

3) And finally the _REALLY_ optimistic question for the specialists:

(Fanfare, fanfare, fanfare, fanfare, fanfare, fanfare, drrrrrrumms)

Is the following covered by XPG4:

Using and evaluating statements and cursor names from variables
      in dynamic SQL.

Has anybody had to cope with similar problems, implemented applications, made experiences, .......

We would appreciate any suggestions and hints, but _PLEASE_ nothing like:

   "... why not use a 4GL ..."

"... why using databases from different vendors ..."

                   Thanx

                        Manfred
