Displaying a message/variable in PL/SQL

Is there a way to display a text message and/or variable value to the screen while inside of a pl/sql block? ...Something like an "echo" or "printf" command. I tried using the "prompt" command, but it didn't like that.
System Specs...
pl/sql ver. 1.0.34.2.1; Oracle ver. 6.0.36 running on a Sun (SunOS 4.1.3).
