Manolis Tsangaris and Jeffrey Naughton's paper in SIGMOD 1991 (May) "A Stochastic Approch for Clustering in Object Bases" is a good reference.
I beleive that M. Tsangaris has another recent paper on the same subject. I'm not positive but I think it may be in SIGMOD 1992.
