SUN SELECTED AS ORACLE'S PRIMARY RDBMS DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM
Oracle Purchases Additional Workstations and Servers For Next-Generation RDBMS Product Development MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- October 27, 1992 -- Sun MicrosystemsComputer Corporation (SMCC) announced today that Oracle Corporation has selected the Sun(TM) platform as its primary development platform for its next-generation RDBMS software products. Under this agreement, Oracle will purchase several hundred SPARCstation(TM) and SPARCserver(TM) systems over the next two years. Oracle's decision to purchase Sun systems for development gives users running Oracle on Sun the added benefit of having the earliest access to new features of the ORACLE RDBMS as well as optimal performance for their applications.
"We have selected Sun as our primary development platform for RDBMS
development because it offers a robust UNIX(R) development environment,
support for symmetric multiprocessing and multi-threading, and excellent
price/performance," said Lawrence J. Ellison, Oracle president and chief
executive officer. "We plan to exploit our mutual strengths in distributed
client-server computing to develop the next generation of the industry's
leading RDBMS."
"Our customers demand outstanding distributed database performance,"
said Scott McNealy, Sun Microsystems president and chief executive officer.
"As Oracle's main RDBMS development platform, SPARC(R)/Solaris(R) will give
our mutual users the ultimate combination of distributed, client-server
capabilities and performance for UNIX client-server applications. Oracle's
selection of Sun is still more proof that companies increasingly develop
their core business applications on Sun."
This agreement underscores the long-term relationship between Oracle and SMCC. Besides being customers of one another, the two companies work closely together to improve their respective products and to assure the best distributed solutions, while offering excellent price/performance for our mutual customers.
In May, Oracle announced that Sun Microsystems will be using its Oracle Manufacturing(R) and Oracle Financials(R) applications suites for worldwide automation of its manufacturing facilities.
In June, Oracle and Sun reported the highest-ever Transaction Processing Council(TM)-A (TPC-A) Benchmark performance to date on a Sun system. The result, 107.28 transactions per second (tpsA), was achieved on a Sun SPARCserver 690MP system running ORACLE7.
In August, the two companies announced a joint development agreement in which developers from SMCC's technical staff have teamed with Oracle developers to enhance and localize the Oracle Financials and Oracle Manufacturing applications that are being used throughout Sun Microsystems worldwide operations.
This strong relationship also benefits both companies with increased sales in both the commercial and federal marketplaces. With the success of the SPARCserver 600MP Series, shipping more than 7,800 of these powerful servers and making it the leading UNIX multiprocessor server, has increased the sales of Oracle products on Sun multiprocessor systems. With Oracle's UNIX market leadership, the availability of Oracle products on Sun computers has been instrumental in SMCC's move into business computing environments.
