Native Date Format Question

I am trying to decode a date which has been returned in native Oracle date format. The documentation says that it is a seven-byte string: date (2 bytes), month, day, hours, minutes, seconds. I am able to correctly extract all of the values from this string except for the date. Is there some magic format for the date within those 2 bytes?
