Boy, my first response was really stupid. Too bad I didn't realize it before I sent it. Let me try again:

select * from emp
where salary >= (select min(salary)

                 from emp
                 where ename in ('Larry','John')
and   salary <= (select max(salary)
                 from emp
                 where ename in ('Larry','John')
