You have a plethora of choices. Oracle publishes a nifty little book that describes the possible choices through a sort of flip chart arrangement, call up your local Oracle sales critter and ask for it.

Unfortunately I never have this thing handy when someone asks this question so I'm working from memory.

You need to be running the same protocol at both ends of the connection. You need the appropriate SQL*Net drivers at both ends of the connection. For example to run over DECnet by running DEC Pathworks on the PC you need SQL*Net DECNet for the VAX and SQL*Net for DECnet (Pathworks) on the PC, alternatively if you run Wollongong WIN/TCP on the VAX and FTP Corp.'s FTP on the PC then you need SQL*Net TCP/IP for WIN/TCP for the VAX and SQL*Net TCP/IP for FTP on the PC.

If you have no network in place then DECnet Pathworks is probably the way to go for simplicity, but I have to say that don't I?

Of course this changes a bit when SQL*Net 2.0 comes along.
