I believe in this instance (no pun intended) they mean more than one set of oracle processes operating on the SAME tablespaces and control files.

Unless AIX really has problems, you should be able to set up multiple databases with different SID's (and presumably the same ORACLE_HOMEs) without any problems.

Since you specified that DOS could do this, I knew you didn't mean the parallel multi-instance effect of VMS, unless you mean IBM Mainframe DOS.
