JDeveloper and ADF Question

I am trying to create a JSP form, based on Oracle ADF components, that will begin in 'find' mode. I've spent some 24 working hours trying to achieve what I hoped would be a relatively simple task. It might be that I am so deep in the woods that the trees aren't visible, but I can't achieve this.

Can someone PLEASE suggest what needs to be set and where in order to start the page in 'find' mode.
