how to dynamically change the value in a list item

My requirement goes this way.
There is a field called project/contract name and a list box called sc_type

in the project/contract name if i select a project, then the list box should populate only 4 values(D, L, P, N). if i select contract then the list box should populate five values (D,L,P,N,A)

Please let me know how this can be achieved. what are the properties that will change.
