[Quoted] The 'link' is through Oracle Networking. The separate Oracle Home issue is related to the Oracle software, not to the data being handled, whether final, test or metadata.
You want to keep a clear separation between the [multiple sets of] software that you are running, the metadata for your tools, the runtime fr your tools and the active data against which your tools operate. A picture of your possible installation might be worthwhile.
If this is not clear to you, you would do well to spend some time in the Oracle Concepts manual (any version) found at http://docs.oracle.com
