Stephan,

the "layout engine" is the Layout Editor of Report Developer, where You make all visual arrangements.
The items are then shown
due to their properties (use the Property Palette)

Did You create the Layout by the Layout Wizard or is it hand-made ? If Your report is as simple as You indicate (no groups), it could by sufficient to use the Wizards for Report creation.

If You worry about alignment, there is a grid to which the fields can be arranged or reshaped. And there are some alignment buttons
in the Layout Editor available when You
multi-click some fields.

Does the print show the same layout quirks as the PDF ?
