This is a known problem and a result of not understanding what downwards compatible means. lower version clients are compatible with higher version databases, the other way around is not guaranteed. Either downgrade the client or upgrade the database. Note: 8.1.7 will be dead for all platforms at the end of this year. You don't want to upgrade to 9i directly.
