Hi Sybrand,

"Monarch of the Glen" bears no resemblance to real life, or Scotland. A bit like the Gretna Green Visitor Centre in fact. All that tartan and shorbread stuff is purely for the tourists (usually American) who think that getting to Gretna is being in the Highlands.

As for wearing the kilt on ceremonial occasions, well, I have a full battle dress and only wear it on special occasions myself. This is for a couple of reasons, but mainly (and being Scottish) the cost. A full kit costs about £1,000 (well mine did) which includes £400 for the 'hand bag' (as my wife calls it) or Sporran.

Footbal fans visiting anywhere wear the kilt and usually a Scottish footbal shirt and trainers. They usually hire a kilt (only) from a dress (!) hire shop. These kilts are usually of lower quality than the proper ones as they usually last about 10 hires before being replaced.

As for visiting the Red Light District of Amsterdam, three reasons for wearing the kilt (1) Women love it (2) Easy access :o) (3) easier to run with your kilt held up that with your trousers down when legging it without paying :o)

Cheers,
Norm.

PS. As for making Amsterdam less safe, have you got the correct fans. Usually Scottish fans get a warm welcome and tearful goodbyes these days. They used to be the worst fans in Europe (the World even) for behaiviour and drunken violence - who do you think taught the English fans how to be yobs.

The English fans used to be so scared of the Scots fans that the English FA killed off the annual Home International football contest because they were frightened to come up to Glasgow every second year. Just because we took Wembly home one year (literally !). :o)
