Thanks for replying, Sybrand. The Oracle 9i dbca program doesn't work on RedHat 9 for some reason. When I run it, it yields nothing: no window, no process, no error message. However, I have scoured the earth (well the Internet, anyway) and found dozens of articles that purport to describe how one can use sqlplus to "connect / as sysdba" and "startup nomount" and then create a database using _at_script.sql. Tragically most of these articles refer to a different version of Oracle (and hence refer to programs that don't exist in 9i) or contain syntax errors in their SQL script. Such is the web.

To cut a long story short, I've managed to create a database and start it. Woohoo. A 1 hour job that somehow stretched to 1 day because of installation failures, a lack of good "Getting Started" documentation, and a dizzying array of 18th Century client GUI programs (why on earth does it have 15 programs to do one job -- administer my database). It was an ugly process and I'm not much enamored of Oracle at this point. Let's hope things improve once I start using it for real ;-) Received on Fri Nov 21 2003 - 23:50:04 CET
