This (and many other surprises) is mentioned in the "New Features" document (part number A96531), and further described in the "Administrator's Guide" (part number A96521) in the section titled "Managing Initialization Parameters Using a Server Parameter File".    Along with many other fine documents, you can find these using the following steps:

A) Getting access to read Oracle's documentation ....

• Access Oracle's Technology Network at http://otn.oracle.com
• Register yourself

B) Getting the documentation ...

• Access Oracle's documentation library, accessible through OTN or from http://docs.oracle.com
• Under "Oracle9i Database Release 2 Documentation Library", click on "View Library"
• Then either search, or
•     click on "Browse the list of books, including PDF for printing."
•     then scroll down to the appropriate title and click on your preferred viewing method.

While there, please note the list of other documents.  These are quite useful.  Oracle even provides a way to search them.

C) Reading ... can't help you there - sorry
