You need to get hold of a book called 'Mother Tongue', written by Bill [Quoted] Bryson, who is a very fun man, with a beard (not that the two facts are necessary related in any way).

A comprehensive assessment of what's been pinched from what language to make the majestic structure that is English.

My personal favourites are Juggernaut and Pyjamas (from Hindi).
