As you might know, if TNS_ADMIN is not defined, the default location is the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory. I prefer ftp'ing the tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora files from the database server to the TNS_ADMIN directory on your linux machine or to the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory.

note: ORACLE_HOME is the directory where you installed 6i on linux machine.
