System.mode as display item

From messages I have read in Google Groups the display item field needs to be on a different block to prevent it being cleared when the form enters query mode. The problem I have is that I do not understand how to populate the display item with the system.mode in the first place (and then ensure it is updated)!
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
