I use Net Vampire for difficult downloads. It's like a terrier; I've sometimes come back after a weekend to something like "41000 failed attempts; trying 41001..." It doesn't stop until (a) it's got the file or (b) you tell it to stop. You can power cycle your PC, unplug and plug your network cable - nothing will stop it.
